I’m always on the lookout for retro-style video games online. Whether updated versions of classic games of the past or something new and different, they all have something that draws me in. So I was delighted with a recent discovery I made when searching the web. I found a large haul of food-related games on a culinary school’s website and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. Many are aimed at young children but others are challenging enough to keep adults entertained too. What I am sure about is that these are retro video games that will make you hungry! I’m sharing a couple that I soon became hooked on I recommend you try them out.
The Open Bar game is situated, unsurprisingly, in a bar and you play the role of the bartender. The object of the game is to take as much money as possible within the time, that being 3 minutes and 50 seconds. To achieve this, all you have to do is pour your customers their drinks by accurately filling their glasses to the line. You will be pouring beer from a pump or using a cocktail shaker and then pouring it into the glass.
A very simple concept but if you leave the drink just short of the line or slightly over then you will be penalised. Each drink will be rated perfect, good or bad. The better the pour the larger the tip you will receive. As anyone will know who’s poured a beer too quickly into a glass it can be tricky to judge. So pour too fast and it will spill over but if you pour too slowly your customers will lose patience and leave. Another problem with being slow is that water condenses on the cold glasses while sitting on the bar, so it has to be regularly wiped to keep it dry. No drinks can be served until the bar top is dry.
I thought I would find this game quite easy but it’s proved a real challenge. Having never worked in a bar my lack of pouring skills has been exposed. However, I’ve been practising hard and slowly getting better!
I grew up watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons so I have a particular fondness for any games that feature their characters. So when I came across the Scooby Doo Sandwich Stack game I couldn’t wait to give it a go.
As Scooby Doo fans will recall, Scooby Doo and Shaggy had two traits in common. Firstly, they were always scared of whatever situation they were in and they were always hungry and looking for food. Naturally, this game focuses on the food aspect.
I used to wonder how Shaggy managed to stay so slim. Here was a guy who could consume a sandwich, about as tall as his own body and without swallowing. A truly impressive feat and yet he was so skinny!
In the game, Scooby and Shaggy need to catch falling ingredients into their sandwich. This is done by tapping to their left or right to move them from side to side. The taller the completed sandwich the more points you will score. Bonus points are awarded if you can complete any of the recipes listed, which starts with a BLT. This then unlocks more recipes and the opportunity to gather more points. Points are multiplied when you collect a glowing ingredient which will cause the game to speed up for a few seconds. Sounds simple so far, but of course, it isn’t!
Amongst the falling ingredients, there are sticks of dynamite. If you catch one of those in your sandwich the game ends spectacularly! It’s all about trying to score as many points as possible before the inevitable explosion.
I’ve been playing this one for a while and I’m finding it quite addictive. Just as I think I’m getting the hang of it, disaster strikes and there’s food everywhere!
Once you’ve mastered these two games there are lots of others available to play on this site. Each food-related game has its unique charm that will keep you engaged and leave you hungry for more!
